Confirmation

Our confirmation program combines our 6th and 7th grade classes. Mentor-and-confirmand teams work together to accomplish confirmation requirements.

Our next confirmation class will begin in January 2003 and will work on the following requirements:

  1. 75 percent participation in worship. It is expected that each person will be in worship on average three out of every four weeks. Attendance will be kept by the church record keepers. You MUST sign the church attendance pads in worship to ensure your presence is recorded. A report will be sent occasionally to let you know your current percentage.
  2. Completion of 10 Worship Response Forms. These forms must be filled out completely. Papers with unsatisfactory responses will be returned and not counted toward your total. If one is returned to you, you may complete it or report on another worship service. If you attend another church, you may fill out a response form. Please turn in a bulletin with any responses from other churches.
  3. 75 percent participation in Sunday school. This is much like requirement No. 1. Please make sure you sign the attendance sheet each week so accurate records can be kept. Updates will be sent periodically.
  4. Completion of six of the following nine memory assignment choices:
    • Books of the Old Testament
    • Books of the New Testament
    • The Prayer of St. Francis
    • The Great Commandment
    • Bible verse or verses chosen by Pastor Rosalind
    • The Serenity Prayer
    • The Lord's Prayer
    • Psalm 23
    • Ten Commandments
  5. Writing one personal creed. At the end of Confirmation, each person will write a paragraph in response to each of the following statements:
    • I believe God is...
    • I believe Jesus is...
    • I believe the Holy Spirit is...
    • I believe the Church is...
    • I believe Christians are...
  6. Ten hours of community service work. Anytime a person volunteers in the community they may bring in a note signed by the person they worked for. Ideas for completing this requirement will be discussed more fully in class.
  7. Become involved in the program and service life of First United Methodist Church. To meet this requirement, confirmands will:
    1. Serve as an acolyte on a regular basis.
    2. Attend a meeting of at least two different groups or administrative groups within the church and write a report on each.
    3. Choose at least two ways to serve within the life of our congregation:
      • Serve as a greeter for two regular worship services.
      • Work in the church nursery at least two hours.
      • Serve as an usher for two regular worship services.
      • Assist in worship by serving as a communion helper, liturgist or children's moment leader.
      • Help in the church office at least two hours.
      • Participate in another project of your own choosing to be coordinated with Pastor Rosalind.
    4. Participate in at least one of the following during the school year:
      • The Junior/Senior High UMYF
      • The Wesley Ringers
      • The Chancel Choir
      • The Contemporary Choir
    5. Participate in at least one of the following during the summer break:
      • The United Methodist summer camp
      • A summer UMYF event
      • Vacation Bible School
      • The Junior High summer mission trip
  8. Personal interview with Pastor Rosalind. This will happen in the weeks before confirmation Sunday to discuss the implications of confirmation and the work done through the year.
  9. The understanding that confirmation will not happen until ALL requirements are met in a satisfactory way. If that means two confirmation services in a year, that is what we will do.
  10. Have a great time and a fun year of confirmation!
